If you’re considering over-the-counter medicines for heart health, remember that they’re not the same as prescription medications. There are several other medications that can be used to lower your heart risk and help manage your risk of heart disease and stroke.
For example, a study in the Journal of the American Heart Association found that taking one tablet of the OTC drug, Prilosec, significantly lowered the risk of major cardiovascular events such as stroke and heart attacks by 22.3 percent. (Prilosec’s maker, Pfizer, didn’t respond to requests for an interview with the Journal.)
The same study also found that patients taking Nexium had a slightly better prognosis than those on a placebo.
